Tech for Democracy: Call for Advisors to join advisory groups on Digital Mobilisation and Digital Responsibility

The role of tech is becoming increasingly important in our daily lives. Digital mobilisations are invigorating democratic values at global scale, but the same technologies are also used to weaken human rights and civic freedoms. Both aspects call for increased international focus on the possibilities and challenges in the intersection of tech and democracy in the digital age.

The Danish government recently launched a new initiative Tech for Democracy 2021 which, among other things, will consist of an international conference on November 18, 2021, bringing together states, tech sector, media, academia, and civil society to focus on concrete ways to ensure that technology supports – rather than undermines – democracy and civil society. Leading up to this conference, Global Focus, the association of Danish non-governmental organisations, is inviting civil society, academia, human rights activists and others interested in tech and democracy from around the world to be part of two advisory groups to help steer the outcomes of the Tech for Democracy initiative in a direction that corresponds with realities encountered globally.

The two different advisory groups will focus on:

1) Digital Mobilisation

The advisory group will advise on how digital mobilisation can be better supported addressing challenges and opportunities including digital infrastructure, digital security and how to increase digital resilience around the world.

2) Digital Responsibility

The advisory group will provide recommendations and thoughts on how governments, tech companies and the private sector in general can be better at protecting and advancing digital rights.

The advisory groups will have great chance in shaping the focus and outcome of the work based on participants knowledge, expertise, and experience and the above should be read as inspiration.

Is this project for you?

Global Focus’ advisory groups will prioritise participants who represent civil society, grassroot movements, indigenous organisations, academia, activist, and rights-holders. A strong interest and knowledge about the intersection of tech, democracy, and human rights is necessary. Participants must agree to equality, non-discrimination, and feminist values. A good command of the English language is important. However, functional competence in English is acceptable. We specifically encourage applications who originate and are located in the Global South.
