Migration and displacement play an increasingly bigger role in Danish and European development policy, and we see an increasing tendency to use development aid and humanitarian efforts to prevent irregular migration.
Today, and especially with the new Danish development policy strategy, the prevention of irregular migration is a highly prioritised and independent area in development aid with its own efforts and goals. Aid funds are used for e.g., border control, partner countries' handling of migrants, and Denmark's own asylum system.
Global Focus emphasis is on that Danish development policy must be shaped by the needs of developing countries and not national interests. We aim to play a constructive role in the area of migration and contribute to ensuring that refugees' rights are respected and that their voices are heard in policy development.
The purpose of the migration working group is to gather knowledge and experience, to develop common positions and recommendations that can give Global Focus and members a unified voice, and thus be able to contribute actively to currents in the field between migration and development, as well as strengthen the human rights-based approach to migration. The working group is open to all members.
