Global Focus, together with ICNL and CliDef, is inviting you for a webinar about SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) – a repressive legal tool used globally to silence critical voices of human rights defenders, climate and environmental defenders, journalists, academics, and others who speak out to challenge powerful interests.
Through abusive lawsuits, or threats thereof, powerful actors such as corporations or politicians drain the financial and psychological resources of critical voices, in some cases until they have no option but to give up their human rights work. In addition to impacting the target of the lawsuits, SLAPPs also have a chilling effect towards the wider civil society. The objective of SLAPPs is therefore not necessarily to gain access to justice or redress, but rather they aim to drain the resources and intimidate opponents and thus restrict civic space broadly.
Join the webinar and listen to the experiences of activists who have been targeted by SLAPPs and pushed back. We will also dive into the global and European trend of SLAPPs from a civic space perspective and get insights on the EU anti-SLAPP directive, expected to be finally adopted end of February.
SPEAKERS:
- Activists (TBC)
- Charlie Holt, European Lead, CliDef
- Nikhil Dutta, Senior Legal Advisor on Global Programs, ICNL
Based on the insights from the speakers, we will discuss joint actions to prevent and push back on SLAPPs in Europe and globally.
All interested civil society actors from both inside and outside of Europe are welcome to join the webinar, share experiences and explore potential avenues for action. We hope to see both familiar and new faces!
